Self-Myofascial Release/Foam Rolling

Written on the 27 January 2016 by Studio Pilates

Self-Myofascial Release or "foam rolling" was once only the domain of athletes, coaches and therapists. But has today, it has become a familiar everyday practice. Self-Myofascial is a fancy word for self-massage of muscle tightness and trigger points. This tool helps to bring muscles back to a healthy elastin state so that they can function quickly and more efficiently.

  • Foam rolling reduces muscle tightness using the pressure to stimulate nerve receptors that allow the muscle to release tight tissue.
  • Foam rolling is best performed after exercise or the following day, rather than as a pre-exercise tool.
  • Foam rolling is not a cure - mobility has a lot to do with the joints, not just the tissue.
  • Improved blood flow to the muscles from rolling out will help remove toxins from the body faster and can help with the appearance of cellulite.
