Having dinner earlier in the evening and having a lighter meal with little or no carbohydrate does help you lose weight faster and overall is a great way to go.
If you've eaten two ridiculously high calorie meals for breakfast and lunch, then having a lighter meal at night will decrease your days calorie intake, but not if you've blown your calorie budget already for the day.
If you have already consumed your whole days energy requirements in the two meals and then you add more calories to your body, you will still gain weight.
There is no point however having a super light meal at night time and then raiding the refrigerator in the middle of the night or just before you go to bed.
Think of your meal portion control like this: Dine like a queen at breakfast, a princess at lunch and a pauper at dinner....
