Your Career as a Pilates Instructor. Matwork and beyond

Written on the 21 January 2015 by Studio Pilates

The Studio Pilates Matwork Level 1 course is a great way to learn new skills, and start a new career in the health and fitness industry. Once you have completed Matwork, it is common to ask yourself "What further education can I do now, and how will that further education progress my career?" The Pilates industry is booming, with just as much demand from both the fitness and rehabilitation populations. Studio Pilates has you covered, with specialised courses to help you advance in the path you want to take. Here are the three best options for those who have completed the Studio Pilates International Matwork level 1 course.

Ball, Circle, Band (BCB)

The Ball, Circle and Band course is the first logical choice to expand on your current matwork repertoire. This course shows you how to use pieces of small Pilates equipment to alter your Matwork exercises (plus other new ones as well!) to increase variety, exercise difficulty, and to facilitate rehabilitation. Using the ball, circles and bands allows you to develop classes that will be enjoyed by a larger demographic of people. BCB is a great course to take if you are intending on taking Pregnancy classes, the Studio Pilates Licenced Instructor program, or any classes where you need to cater to an individual's needs. It is also a great alternative to investing in bigger, more expensive equipment if you don't have the space or money to spare.

Advanced Matwork

Advanced Matwork is an excellent course for those who wish to challenge their stronger, fitter clients. The exercises taught in this course are more fitness-based, but can inject a lot of fun into your workouts. You will also learn great alternatives to your staple Pilates exercises, to cater for those unique individuals who need a little extra than just your normal abdominal curl. Choose Advanced Matwork if you feel like you want to take your Matwork to another level (really useful for those who work in dedicated Pilates Studios) or if you have a lot of high-level clients.

Reformer level 1

Reformer level 1 takes your Pilates knowledge and transforms you into a Studio-ready instructor. You get introduced to the Reformer, which is the piece of equipment that Pilates was originally conceived with. Pilates takes on a whole different persona as you learn how to be able to isolate every single muscle in your body, from your deep core musculature to all the muscles in your arms and legs. With the help of the reformer, you can facilitate classes to the injured, elite, and it does not discriminate towards age. Becoming a Studio Pilates Reformer level 1 instructor gives you the skills to be able to work in a boutique-level Pilates Studio, or even start your own. Reformer qualifications also generally give you the opportunity to demand higher remuneration rates, or if you feel like it, make Pilates a full-time career. Reformer level 1 is also the first step in becoming an instructor at a Studio Pilates International studio.
