What is the difference between matwork and studio sessions?
Studio sessions are performed in small groups on specialised Pilates equipment. The equipment adds variety and resistance by using springs and this enables the whole body to be worked out.
Mat classes are larger group sessions consisting purely of exercises performed on a mat. Mat classes are not generally suitable for injuries or pregnancy.
What do I expect when starting studio sessions?
An Initial Consultation is performed by one of our instructors prior to starting. In this session, an injury and medical history is taken, an in depth postural analysis, muscle function/recruitment tests are performed, and flexibility of each muscle group is assessed. From the results gathered, guidelines are then set to maximise your physical progression and result gains. You will learn the basic muscles activation exercises and stretches that are specific to your body, the terminology we use to help with performing the exercises correctly and you will use the machines a little to familiarise yourself with them. After your first session, you may feel some slight muscle soreness, this is simply from using muscles that have not been used in the correct way for a long time. This soreness does subside in a couple of days and is a sign of the body already improving.
Your instructor will formulate a plan for you according to your goals.
How many times a week should I come into the studio?
Pilates is a type of exercise that can be done daily and this is encouraged. For best results you should aim for 3 workouts or more per week. Whilst you can do Pilates every day, not everyone can make it into a studio that often, and some people do not live near a studio. That is why we developed our Personal Pilates Studio - so that it is a convenient and cost effective way to bring the studio experience into your own home and get results fast. A lot of people will use the DVDs or Personal Pilates Studio at home on the days they cannot make it to the studio.
How far in advance do I need to book?
Studio Pilates International is very popular, so at times it may take a little while to book your initial consultation, but we always try to accommodate you as soon as possible. Usually for the initial consultation you will need to book a week or two in advance, but there are sometimes sessions available sooner, so it pays to check. If we cannot fit you in at your time of choice, we do have a standby list, and if any sessions do become available we will call you to let you know.
