A Day in the Life of a Pilates Instructor | Meet Saba

As a physiotherapist, I work in a clinic where I alternate between running specialty Pilates classes and performing hands on treatment for physio clients. Many of my clients come for women’s health related issues, pregnancy/post-natal or chronic pain. Incorporating Pilates is a way to break up hands on treatment and ensure better outcomes for my clients.

Each day can look pretty different for me and I have also just opened my own own Physio clinic in Brisbane which offers hands on treatment and Pilates!

10:00AM

My first class of the day is a mums and bubs Pilates class. I usually have about 6 ladies in the class who either currently pregnant or up to 1 year post-natal. They are Matwork classes and I incorporate the Magic Circle, resistance bands and large swiss balls. I find most of my mums and bubs clients come to strengthen and recover from birth and also to help with general injuries. This class has lots of laughter and it’s so rewarding to see the mums getting stronger and improve every week!

11:30AM

From 11.30am-1.00pm, I see my physio patients for hands on treatment. It depends on the patient, but I treat musculoskeletal injuries with manual therapy, massage, and acupuncture/dry needling. I also have a lot of women’s health patients where we work on incontinence and other women’s health related issues. For any patients where rehab work is involved (about 90% of my clients), I prescribe Pilates related exercises as a part of their homework to assist their rehab and recovery.

01:00PM

Lunch time! I usually catch up on client notes, grab a coffee and do some stretching to release any tight muscles that I have. I like to take this time to do some self massage and some thoracic extension work with a foam roller!

02:00PM

From 2.00pm-5.00pm I do more hands on treatment with individual patients.

05:00PM

Before heading home, I run one more Pilates class at the clinic. Most of my clients in this class are 30-70 years old and have chronic pain (mostly back or neck pain). I have up to 10 people in this class and I find the Pilates really helps my clients with pain management, general fitness and also mental health! In particular, I find a lot of clients love the Pilates breathing to help with stress. Throughout the day, I end up doing a lot of the exercises with my clients as I demonstrate, so I find I get quite a bit of a workout in myself throughout the day!

06:00PM

Once I finish work, I head to the gym for a quick 30 minute cardio workout on the treadmill or bike. Then I head home to have dinner and watch some Greys Anatomy!
