Instructing World-Wide
The great news is that completing most Pilates courses in Australia will allow you to instruct in a majority of countries overseas and at Studio Pilates International, we have a large number of instructors currently working around the world in a variety of settings.
For some countries, once you have your instructor certification, all you will need to do is obtain instructing insurance in that particular country (ie. your Australian instructing insurance won’t cover you to instruct in the United States, you would need to source an American insurance provider).
Some countries may require for you to also join a Pilates or Fitness association if this is mandatory to working as a Pilates instructor in that country, however this is rare.
It is worth noting also that requirements for working overseas may differ if you hold any qualifications in addition to your Pilates training.
For example, if you are a Personal Trainer in Australia and a Registered Exercise Professional with Fitness Australia, and looking to move to the United Kingdom, you may be entitled to transfer your Fitness Australia membership to the equivalent fitness body called “REPs UK”. You can then obtain your Pilates insurance through REPs UK. Similarly, if you are an allied health professional such as a Physiotherapist, there may be an equivalent physiotherapy association in the country that you are looking to move to. And you may be able to obtain instructing insurance through that association. So if you hold any additional health or fitness qualifications, it is definitely worth researching the equivalent body in the new country and seeing what you are covered for.
However, if you do not have other health or fitness qualifications, most of the time you just need to source instructing insurance in that particular country and Google is a good place to find this information. You can perform an internet search of the words “Pilates instructor insurance United Kingdom”. From there, you can choose the best policy for your individual needs. If you are thinking about moving overseas, it is also a good idea to research any places of potential employment in that country. For example, if you are moving to Los Angeles, research the Pilates studios in the area and contact them to find out if they have any requirements for hiring new instructors as, similar to Australia, each studio may have different hiring practises and requirements.
