Pilates Instructor Insurance
Depending on where you work, you may need to take out your own Pilates insurance. If you are self employed you definitely will need this, and some employers will require you to have your own insurance. Other employers will already have insurance that you will cover you to instruct in their premises, so you do not need to take out your own insurance policy.
As an instructor, it is very rare that you would ever need to claim on your insurance, but it is always best practice to have this insurance to protect yourself at the end of the day. For Australian instructors, we recommend a company called JUA Underwriting for instructor insurance. For USA instructors, we recommend Alternative Balance, K & K Insurance Group and Namasta. For UK instructors, we recommend Markel, John Ansell & Partners and Weald Insurance Brokers.
If you are completing Pilates training and also hold additional health or fitness qualifications, you may already be covered to teach Pilates under your current insurance plan.
ALLIED HEALTH PROFESSIONALS
If you are a qualified physiotherapist, your physiotherapy insurance should cover you to instruct Pilates, but it may be wise to check with them anyway. For all other allied health professionals, check with your insurance body to check if your current insurance body covers you for Pilates.
EXISTING FITNESS PROFESSIONALS
If you are a Fitness Trainer with insurance through Fitness Australia, your Fitness Australia insurance will cover you to teach all of the exercises contained in courses which are Fitness Australia approved (attract CECs). If you complete courses which do not attract Fitness Australia CECs, you may need to obtain additional insurance to cover that additional repertoire of exercises. We recommend contacting your insurance provider to check what you are covered for.
If you are a Fitness Professional who is not a Fitness Australia Registered Exercise Professional (REPs), we recommend contacting your current insurance provider to check if you are covered to teach Pilates. If your insurance company does not cover you to teach Pilates exercises, refer to the section below for our recommended insurance company (JUA Underwriting).
MASSAGE THERAPISTS AND EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGISTS
Check with your relevant association to see if you are covered under your existing insurance to teach Pilates. If you are not covered, see the information below about obtaining additional coverage.
